The American Staffordshire Terrier is an amusing and outgoing dog breed, which is why many Americans love to have them as companions. It has been around since the early 20th century and since then many people have enjoyed their presence.

This dog breed is quite different from their cousins, which are the American Pill Bull Terriers. People will observe that as compared to them, they are a bit larger because of their bigger bone structure. Therefore, they also weigh heavier that the other dog breed. Because these dogs are muscular, they can be very strong.

TEMPERAMENT

This certain type of dog breed is a great fighter especially when it knows that its loved ones or owners are in danger. They show courage when they smell that someone dear to them is being threatened. Thats how protective they are. They are also known to have a higher pain tolerance as compared to other dog breeds, which is why they make good guard dogs to their owners. Not only are they courageous, but intelligent as well. When trained properly, they can even show better behavior.

According to a study, people found out that the American Staffordshire Terrier has above average aggression when dealing with other dogs, but when it comes to humans, the level is below average. This just shows that they have a big heart for people especially their owners.

And even if the American Staffordshire Terrieris known for their protective instincts, they can be nice companions as well. They are gentle and good-natured creatures that pet owners would love. They can also be very affectionate, which is why families love to have them around the house. With proper training, they wouldnt have a problem getting along with others. This dog breed is also loyal to their owners so you can trust them to be by your side when you need them. Aside from that, they are also obedient. They like pleasing their master or their owners any way they can. Actually, the American Staffordshire Terrier is usually recommended for pet owners who can show leadership or a certain amount of control. The reason for this is that these dogs usually follow a leader in a pack. And when they deal with humans, they should consider them the leaders so they will follow their commands.

HISTORY

This American Staffordshire Terrier was first bred in Staffordshire, England back in the 19th century. The early owners of this breed used them for baiting bulls or for fighting. The dogs were a mixture of bulldog and terrier, which is why it was then called the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and they look very strong. When it was brought to the United States, breeders wanted to make it larger and have a more powerful head. Because of that, they formed a new breed, which is what people now know as the American Staffordshire Terrier that is bigger than its British cousin.

In the 1900s, when dog fighting was prohibited in the US, two strains of this type of dog have been developed. The two were called the show strain and the fighting dog strain. The former was known as the American Staffordshire Terrier, while the latter was labeled as the American Pill Bull Terrier. Nowadays, people already consider the two as different breeds. Though they have some differences in terms of appearance, the two are still similar when it comes to many attributes.

Both breeds have a loving nature and when taken cared of by the right owner, they can form a great relationship with them. They are also gentle and enjoy having some playtime with their master.

GROOMING

Because of this type of dogs short hair, it is very easy to groom. Just regular brushing is enough to keep it looking neat. Moreover, baths are essential to keep them clean and smelling nice, but this is usually done only when deemed necessary since constant bathing will make them feel cold. Just like other pets, it is also recommended for owners to bring them to the veterinarian for regular check-ups to make sure that they are healthy and in tip-top shape.

HAPPY DOG

The American Staffordshire Terrier is also considered as a generally stable and happy dog. They can get along with both children and adults so they know how to socialize with others. Owners just need to remember to train them early to further develop their social skills. Another thing that owners must remember about this breed of dog is that they also need daily exercise. A long walk around the neighborhood can keep them happy and it will prevent them from showing aggressiveness. Jogging or running is also a good way to get them to exercise. Just keep in mind to be in front so that the dog will understand that the owner is his leader. It is also part of its training.
